Facilities

Tour our premises and read about our up-to-date facilities and equipment

Consultation Rooms

We have five large consulting rooms in the main practice. Each consultation lasts around 15 minutes and our spacious rooms are filled with most equipment and medicines the Veterinary Surgeon needs. The tables are adjustable, and secure windows give natural light. All consultation rooms are also air conditioned.

Take a look around the consulting room and you will see various informative posters, which the vet may refer to during your consultation. If your pet requires blood sampling, clipping or any other procedure, your vet may call a nurse for assistance or relocate to the prep room for convenience.

Isolation Ward

This ward has a separate entrance so that we can ensure infectious diseases are not spread to other patients. We adopt barrier nursing techniques to ensure that all of the in-patients are not put at any risk of cross contamination.

Kennels & Cattery

Our kennels ward comprises of three individual sections, we have 25 kennels in total which are divided via a sliding door into the cattery, dog ward and small animal section. Each patient has their own individual kennel with comfy bedding, food and water and often the toys that they have at home.

The kennels have been designed to be a warm and comfortable environment, so that we can monitor each patient closely. We have a passive ventilation system which is constantly extracting any odours, and an air conditioning system which keeps the temperature at the required setting.

There is a dedicated kennel nurse who devotes all of their time to caring for the inpatients and relaying all the information to the Veterinary surgeon in charge.

Nurses' Room

Here the nurses can conduct diet, dental and puppy clinics among the many nurse clinics we offer. This room is also used for post-operative checks on animals which have undergone procedures to ensure they are comfortable and recovering well at home.

Our nurses are more than happy to show you how to administer medications to your pet or care for him or her in any way, you only have to ask.

Prep Room

This preparation area is used to carry out procedures such as blood sampling and the placing of intravenous cannulas. We also use this area for preparing animals for theatre, and for non-sterile procedures such as dentals.

The prep room is equipped with oxygen and anaesthetic machines, theatre lighting and ventilation, and a Bair hugger. These are used to maintain the patient’s temperature under anaesthetic.

Operating Theatre

Our operating theatre has all the equipment for maintaining anaesthesia and monitors to assist the nurses with all aspects of a patient’s health during surgery. The patient’s temperature is important and our ‘Bair hugger’ warm air system is often used.

The room is designed for maximum sterility and cleanliness, with all equipment such as instruments and suction available. Our surgeons wear special sterilised gowns and other protective items of clothing.

Theatre Reception

Theatre reception is a nice quiet area where patients are admitted and discharged from our kennels and cattery having been with us for the day. Here we also run through discharge notes and dispense medication to clients and their patients.

This area gives us a chance to demonstrate our buster collars, medical pet shirts and comfy collars, for those pets who fancy a nibble at their stitches!

Laboratory

Our in house diagnostic laboratory contains biochemistry, haematology and electrolyte machines and many in-house testing kits for a variety of diagnostics, such as:Urine sampling Thyroid testing Feline Leukemia/FELV testing Canine and Feline Pancreatic lipase testing Blood gases Coagulation testing Pre-Anaesthetic blood screening General Health Profiles In July 2011, we purchased one of the most up to date Heamatology analysers on the market today: The Idexx Procyte.

We also perform microscopic cytological examinations under the microscope, dermatophyte testing, urinalysis, packed cell volume tests and faecal examinations. The majority of samples we like to run in-house so we have a quick turn-around of results for our patient’s, although some samples will have to be sent to an external laboratory for analysis as the test maybe be something not yet available for veterinary practices to include on a daily basis or it may be a specialized test that only an external laboratory can perform, either way our external laboratory collects all of our samples overnight by a specialist courier and promise to have the results emailed to us as soon as they are available.

Ultrasound Scanner

The Practice has an advanced ultrasound machine available. Ultrasonography assists in the diagnosis of a range of medical conditions. The machine is used to look at many things but most commonly for: Pregnancy Diagnosis Cardiac Scans Abdominal Scans ECGs Patients usually tolerate an ultrasound scan very well without the need for sedation or anaesthetic which is particularly beneficial during emergency situations.

Transport

Our practice van is used for a variety of purposes, mainly deliveries of medicines and food to our clients*. In very rare cases or emergencies, it can be used to collect animals or allow for home visits.

Cat Clinic

Our cat clinic consists of two consulting rooms. Each consultation lasts around 15 minutes and the rooms consist of  equipment's your cat may require. The cat clinic consulting rooms are only used for cats and contain additional pheromone sprays and plug ins to help to make as calm of an environment as possible.

Other Equipment

X-ray:

Our x-ray suite comprises of a fully adjustable floating xray table, this allows us to move the table in any horizontal position, around the beam of the x-ray tube head which is positioned above the table. ECG: An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a simple, safe, pain free, non-invasive test that is used to check the heart’s rhythm and electrical activity. Clips/sensors are attached to the patient’s skin, usually on the limbs, this then allows a recording of the heart’s electrical activity to be printed onto paper for interpretation by the veterinary surgeon.

Endoscopy:

An endoscope is a long, flexible tube with a camera and light source at the tip. At Lawrence Veterinary Centre we have two endoscopes – a longer apparatus which can be inserted into the mouth and oesophagus so that the stomach can be examined and a smaller rigid endoscope which allows us to visualise smaller areas such as the nasal cavity.

Dental area:

Dentals are performed daily under general anaesthetic and we have a specific dental area set up for this procedure. We use a piezoelectrical scaler which safely and quickly removes tartar from the patient’s teeth, a high speed drill which allows teeth to be split prior to extraction and a slow speed polisher to make the teeth shine. We also have specific equipment available for treating the teeth of animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs.

Intensive Care Incubators:

At Lawrence Veterinary Centre, we have two incubators. The larger, neonatal incubator allows us to supply oxygen and heat in a controlled environment. It is frequently used for small dogs, cats and other small animals that require intensive/critical care and those needing extra heat and/or oxygen following anaesthetics. We also have a smaller incubator ideal for smaller pets.
